7/29/2010
I absolutely can’t wait for SPTechCon in Boston this October! My co-workers will be there, and we will all be in the SharePoint911 booth there! This conference is not only wonderful because of the many hour-long sessions, but there is a whole day of “101” sessions that are more intense half-day or full-day workshops. Oh, and when you go to their website, there’s a great video on the left side of the homepage with 3 minutes of highlights from the last conference.
The following is the list of the five sessions that I’ll be teaching, and each has a link to add to your own calendar:
W8-AM: SharePoint 2010 and Office 2010 Integration
Wednesday, October 20, 2010: 8:30AM – noon Add to my calendar Me & Mark Miller This beginner-level session will help end users, project managers and information workers to discover the best ways to tackle your daily work with the 2010 Microsoft Office system. Tips include how to use Outlook to keep all your SharePoint lists and libraries within easy reach, and how to display library metadata within Word documents. From offline document editing and version comparisons, to reporting on SharePoint library data, this session is packed with tricks you can use to increase your SharePoint productivity. Think about integration from an end user’s perspective and come learn topics, such as how to make it simple to save files directly to SharePoint and work more efficiently. The demonstration will feature a company policy management system, and will feature Access custom lists, content types, and quick parts. Many of the integration points are available in both the 2007 and the 2010 suite of products. Integration improvements in SharePoint and Office 2010 will also be highlighted, such as those in InfoPath Forms Services, Visio Services and Access Services.
W8-PM: Creating Custom Business Solutions
Wednesday, October 20, 2010: 1:30PM – 5PM Add to my calendar Some of the most commonly asked questions that SharePoint site managers and end users ask are around the need to create custom business solutions without having to be a developer. In this workshop, Laura Rogers will teach you how to use Data View/Data Form Web parts in SharePoint Designer 2010. Not only will this workshop cover Data View Web part fundamentals, but you will also learn specific examples of ways to put these skills into play. It is a best practice to learn what can be done out of the box in SharePoint before delving into custom code. This workshop will be presented using SharePoint 2010, but the topics that will be covered can be accomplished in either 2007 or 2010. Laura will highlight the new user interface in SharePoint Designer 2010 and the new ways to do those old familiar tasks. What will you learn in this workshop? - Fundamentals and best practices associated with creating data view Web parts, such as conditional formatting and hyperlinks - Creating a merged list of multiple document libraries - Creating a change control system mash-up - Creating a joined view of two different lists - Creating a list/library permissions dashboard
This session is designed from power users, project managers, business analysts and developers.
107: SharePoint 2010 Out-of-the-Box Web Parts
Thursday, October 21, 2010: 9:30AM – 10:45AM Add to my calendar This session will demonstrate just how flexible and useful the out-of-the-box Web parts are in SharePoint Server 2010. There will be an overview of many of these Web parts, along with demonstrations of several new Web parts and some that have been improved or changed from MOSS 2007. Best practices and use cases of individual Web parts will be discussed. Some of the Web parts that will be covered are filter, content rollup, people, chart, Excel Web access and media. Attendees will also be given a demonstration on customizing data views using the new SharePoint Designer 2010. It helps developers know what can be done out of the box before writing code, and it’s also useful for end users to know the full extent of SharePoint’s Web parts.
506: The Power of Content Types
Friday, October 22, 2010: 8:30 – 9:45 Add to my calendar In SharePoint, the concept of content types seems a bit ambiguous to most people, which becomes a negative factor when it comes to actual use of this feature. In this session, Laura Rogers will teach you what you need to know about content types to be able to implement them in your company. You may have heard that content types can be used in order to upload document templates so that they display as choices for users on a library’s “New” button. Yes, that can be done… but wait, there’s so much more! In conjunction with site columns, content types can be utilized to create custom business solutions. Take your lists and libraries to the next level without having to do any custom development. In this session, demonstrations will be done to take you through common scenarios, and show how to use the power of content types in SharePoint. Many of these concepts carry over from SharePoint 2007 to 2010, but new 2010 capabilities will be highlighted.
806: SharePoint Designer 2010 Workflows: A Case Study
Friday, October 22, 2010: 2:30 – 3:45 Add to my calendar In this session, learn how to create custom workflows in SharePoint 2010, using SharePoint Designer 2010. The example used will be a travel-request system in SharePoint, with multiple levels of approval. Attendees will learn how much the approval workflow process has been improved in SharePoint 2010 compared to the same workflow in 2007, how to involve multiple SharePoint lists in a workflow, and how InfoPath is highly integrated into the SharePoint Designer workflow and the assigned approval tasks. Laura will walk through the creation of the entire workflow, and the new product capabilities, workflow customizations, and troubleshooting steps will be discussed along the way.

The SharePoint Best Practices Conference is coming up next month in Washington, DC (Reston, VA, specifically). This is definitely one to look forward to.
Here are the sessions that I’ll be presenting at the conference:
Data View Web Part Best Practices - Old and New
Audience: Business Analyst, Power User, Administrator Session Level: 200 In order to create custom business solutions in SharePoint, data view web parts are often created using SharePoint Designer. These data views are commonly used in order to take list and library views to a higher level of customization, without having to write code. In SharePoint 2010, these web parts have been drastically improved. In this session, you will learn how the data view web part best practices have changed in SharePoint 2010, which has made them not only more pervasive, but more accessible. You will learn old and new best practices related to list and library web parts, compared to views of other types of data sources.

Form Approval Process - Best Practices
Audience: Business Analysts, Project Managers, Information Workers, Power Users Session Level: 100 In your company, forms are everywhere, and they usually have some type of workflow associated with them. Approval workflows are a very common request in SharePoint, and there are several different ways to go about creating this process. SharePoint Designer and InfoPath are common tools that are used to not only create the business form, but to run it through an approval. Depending on the business requirements, there are different best practices involved. In this session, attendees will learn how SharePoint 2010 and InfoPath 2010 can be leveraged the most efficiently to create an approval process that is best for the specific project. Improvements from 2007 to 2010 will also be discussed.

See you all there!
3/12/2010This is a post to recap what's been going on lately, what's coming up, and where I've been hiding…. not necessarily in that order.
SPEVO
First of all, I'm excited to tell you that the SharePoint Evolution conference is coming up very soon. This will be a great trip to London! My presentation will be "Making the Most of Out-of-Box Web Parts". In the past, I've done one about the MOSS web parts, and then recently I've done a presentation about just the new 2010 web parts. This one will be all SharePoint 2010 information, but not exclusively the new web parts, I'll cover new ones and some of the ones that are very useful, but haven't changed since MOSS, such as the filter web parts. Therefore, the attendee takeaway will include solutions that can be put in place immediately, without having to wait for SharePoint 2010 to be implemented. If you're on Twitter, #SPEVO is the hashtag to follow.
Book
Another major thing going on in right now, you know in my "spare time", is Shane, Todd and Steve's new SharePoint book, called Professional SharePoint 2010 Administration (which you can pre-order if you're so inclined). I'm a Contributing Author, which means I'm writing two chapters. I've been spending a lot of time on this in the past month or two, which is why I haven't been blogging much, haven't been on Stump the Panel, etc. I think I'll be done this weekend. Whew.
SP Tech Blog
Last month, shortly after SPTechCon, I wrote an article for the SPTechBlog called "Spotlight on 2010: The SharePoint/Office Integration Story". This was written shortly after finishing my chapter about integration, so these topics were all very fresh in my mind. The SharePoint/Office integration stuff is VERY exciting to me, by the way. ;-)

Data View Web Part Series
On endusersharepoint.com, I'm currently doing a workshop series about SharePoint's data view web part. When Mark and I do these workshops, they're actually hands-on. This means that all attendees each get their own SharePoint site to use, to work along as I talk through the solution. These are a lot of fun, and very interactive, with continuous chat room questions and discussion from attendees. We've already done part one of the three part series, but there are two more that you can still catch, with DETAILS HERE. The next two workshops are "Dynamic Feedback Forms" and "Build a Site Permissions Dashboard".
SPTechCon (SharePoint Technology Conference)
This conference was in San Francisco in February, and was fantastic! Presentations went great, and I got to see my co-workers. As you may know, we're consultants and live all over the country. So, conferences are the main chances that I get to actually hang out with them. Jennifer Mason, Shane Young, Todd Klindt, Randy Drisgill, and John Ross, were presenters at this conference. The next SPTechCon will be in Boston in October!
SharePoint Saturday New Orleans
February 27th was SharePoint Saturday in New Orleans! Cathy and I drove down together from Birmingham to go speak at this event. I grew up in and around New Orleans and my parents live in Baton Rouge, so this was an event that I just couldn't pass up. Tiffany Ingargiola, Cherie Taylor, and Casey Blondeau were the main organizers, and they did an AMAZING job! There were lots of attendees, and everything seemed to go extremely smoothly. It was so great to finally get to meet them after knowing them on twitter for months.

Okay, back to that book writing… see y'all in London. 1/4/20102010 update… 2010 the year, as opposed to the version of SharePoint. This year is going to be great, and I’m looking forward to going to some SharePoint events and also learn more and more about SharePoint 2010. Here’s a little update on some stuff I have coming up. There’s a list of Speaking Engagements on my blog, on the right side, but here’s a more detailed list of upcoming stuff. I’ll be speaking on the new social experience in SharePoint 2010. We’re trying to grow our group, so please spread the word if you’re from around here. Let me or @catpaint1 or @LoriGowin know if you’d like to be on the mailing list, or if you’re a vendor who is interested in sponsoring us. Also, we’re always looking for new speakers. You don’t need to do some extravagant PowerPoint presentation. It can be something as simple as a demo of something you’ve been working on, or something cool you figured out how to do. Follow: @bhamspug @catpaint1 @LoriGowin This is the first virtual SharePoint Saturday, and it is a global event! The site has a list of the parts of the world and associated times. For me in the Central Time Zone, the event starts at 2AM. Wow, I’m dedicated. Please take a look at the site, and there’s a link to register. Follow: @EUSP @ericharlan, Hash tag: #spsemea This one is going to be fantastic! I already wrote a blog post, listing all of the sessions I’ll be teaching. Of the list of sessions, the one I’m looking forward to the most will be the half-day workshop called “Creating Custom Business Solutions”. This is ALL about the data view web part! First, I’ll be going over the main fundamentals working in SharePoint Designer 2007 with data. Then, the bulk of the afternoon will be demonstrations of custom solutions using the data view web part, and maybe I’ll throw in a little workflow stuff. Then, the last hour or so will be all about SharePoint Designer 2010, with a demo or two, and discussion of what’s new. If you’re going to this one, note that I’m doing two different presentations about web parts. One is about MOSS 2007, and the other is SharePoint 2010. Follow: @sptechcon, Hash Tag: #sptechcon This SharePoint Saturday is going to be extra special for me, because New Orleans is my home town! I was born in Metairie, which is a suburb of New Orleans. I grew up in Luling, which is a very small Cajun town across the river from New Orleans. We moved to Baton Rouge when I was 12, and I ended up going to college at LSU (Louisiana State University). With all that said, I’m excited about taking a trip back home, visiting parents and relatives, and speaking at SharePoint Saturday. Maybe I’ll even run into old friends or schoolmates! Follow: @spsnola @tiffanywi @cheritnola, Hash Tag: #spsnola This conference in London is going to be amazing! It’s put on by Steve Smith / Combined Knowledge, and there is a phenomenal list of speakers to present there. I haven’t been to Europe in at least 15 years, so I’ll be glad to go back and have some further London adventures. Besides myself, other SharePoint911 colleagues who will be presenting are Shane Young and Todd Klindt. Follow: @stevesmithck Hash Tag: #spevo In Summary, it’s going to be an exciting first quarter for me. All of these events are on my SharePoint calendar, if you’d like to connect to it or export these events to your calendar. 11/24/2009There’s another SharePoint conference getting closer. It’s the SharePoint Technology Conference! I’ll be presenting the following sessions at this conference, and will be looking forward to seeing you there! TECHNICAL LEVEL: Basic AUDIENCE: Business users, project managers, developers, business analysts A lot of my favorite SharePoint buddies that I’ve met before will be there also, such as @BrettLonsdale @catpaint1 @SharePointLee @stevenmfowler @ronjones03 @TedPattison @sharepointsara and colleagues at SharePoint911: @drisgill @johnrossjr Looking forward to meeting some new people, and learning some more about SharePoint 2010. 10/30/2009 Finally writing my wrap-up of the big SharePoint Conference last week. There's just SO much to say, the task of doing a wrap-up has been a bit daunting. So, I'll just (try to) keep it brief. Ha. Table of Contents: Work This conference was my first time working in the SharePoint 911 booth, as a new employee. The very first night of the conference was huge for all the exhibitors! My co-workers gave me booth training. Here are some photos of us. Note that I didn't take any of these pictures myself, and didn't even bring my camera. These are friends' pictures. I love my co-workers! This is a picture that Randy Drisgill took of Jennifer Mason and I, hiding behind a giant box of cows! This was on Sunday, when we were setting up our booth. Jump shot by Marcy Kellar! Randy, Jennifer, John, Shane, Me and Todd (behind Fabian). Nicola is hiding in there somewhere. Oh, and by the way, Todd Klindt is the newest SharePoint911 employee!! Me, Randy and Jennifer (by Marcy Kellar). That night, we all gathered at the Mandalay Bay's Eye Candy Lounge, and wore our Twitter shirts for identification purposes. Hmmm, I can't seem to find any actual photographic evidence of that night. It was a lot of fun getting to meet so many friends in person for the first time. Definitely a highlight. I had booth duty every morning at 8AM, and then I was a proctor in the hands on labs for a couple of hours each afternoon. The hands on labs thing was quite an interesting experience, and I enjoyed getting to know a lot of the Microsoft people who were fellow proctors. There were about fifty labs, so guess what question I was asked the most. "Are these labs going to be available to us after the conference?". The answer was that yes, they (Microsoft) were planning on posting the lab manuals at least. HERE are the ones for developers, but I'm not sure if the rest are up yet, or where they would be. Regarding the labs themselves, Microsoft stated that they would love to put them up and make them publicly available, but the pre-beta release that they were created in isn't exactly ready for that. So, I guess that answer is "later". Conference Besides the booth and the proctoring, I went to about two and two half other sessions during the week. That's fine, I'll just watch the others on the website. We had this whole live blogging thing going on, organized by Mark Miller of EndUsersharepoint.com. Here are the sessions and partial sessions that I went to (and live blogged in): Adoption Strategies for Social Computing, by Alina Fu Went to half of this session, and what made it so perfect was that I sat next to the social media guru, Michael Gannotti! Mark took that picture of us. This was a good one because we learned about the business application of social computing, and how in SharePoint 2010, all of the social computing will be highly integrated with information workers' day to day tasks and workflow. SharePoint 2010 Administration Part 1, by Todd Klindt and Shane Young Went to about 15 minutes of this session. This was a good introduction to all of the new capabilities that exist for SharePoint server administrators in SharePoint 2010. There's so much! Shane and Todd did four or five sessions at the conference, and even a post-conference full-day workshop on SharePoint 2010 installation and upgrade. Building Applications with InfoPath and SharePoint Designer 2010, by Darvish Shadravan and Roberto Taboada Went to this one with co-workers Jennifer Mason and Larry Riemann. This was mostly a big long demo, and we got to learn all of the new capabilities with the two products and their integration. I'm such a geek, I loved this one! Can't wait to dig in and really learn this stuff. Creating Data-Centric Composite Applications using SharePoint Designer 2010, by Dustin Miller Data view web parts! List view web parts are now GONE in SharePoint 2010, and have all now been replaced with data view web parts. This session was a series of demos (which seem much more useful to me than slides, anyway). Okay, so those were all the sessions I went to. Again, the other great thing about the conference was getting to see all the people of this great SharePoint community that we have. The other day, Mike Watson, Mark Miller, Mike Gannotti, Joel Oleson and I had a little chat, and they agreed about how wonderful it was meeting everyone. Social Monday night was the Synteractive party in their suite. My friend Heather Waterman has a new job there, and I'm so happy for her! Co-workers were all there, and even my BFF, Mike Gannotti was there, too. Tuesday night? What? The 80's beach party with Huey Lewis and the News! This was, like, totally awesome and rad. I know, I'm a ham. This was so much fun, though, getting to dress up! The girls and I even primped together in my room, and bonded over hair curlers and eye shadow. (Sara, Lori, Yvonne). Marcy Kellar also took a lot of great pictures that night. On Wednesday night, SharePoint911 and AvePoint sponsored an Education Mixer. Since a lot of our clients are in the education sector, we decided to have a party for all education people, so that they may meet each other and share ideas. Jennifer Mason and Nicola Young were the main organizers of this, and we had a LOT of people show up. After that, some of us tweeps got together and played a little Texas Hold 'Em (@mrackley). Joel took this picture, but unfortunately he went all in on the very first hand and lost. L Thursday night was Cathy Dew's birthday, so a bunch of us went out to eat Italian for dinner. Group pic: @EUSP @WonderLaura @thekicker @catpaint1 @ruveng @ToniFrankola @gvarro @rharbridge @MOSSLover Later that evening, we ran into a whole other crowd of SharePoint friends, such as my new BFF, @Karuana (sorry, Mike G). She and I bonded over stories of fashion accessories, hair styles, and shoes. (I'm being sarcastic... well maybe except for the part about the shoes) Other than that, Friday was the full day SharePoint admin session by Todd and Shane, that Cathy and I went to. Here's the twitpic of that event. See you all later, and now I'm going to get back to all that technical blogging, especially about SharePoint 2010. Oh yeah, and Dux interviewed a bunch of us, asking "If SharePoint Never existed, what would you be doing?" What @wonderlaura would do if SharePoint never existed #spc09 from Dux Raymond Sy on Vimeo. 10/14/2009Hi everybody! Then, the very next week, well, I don’t have to tell YOU… It’s Microsoft’s SharePoint Conference!!! October 18 – 22nd in Las Vegas Yes, I’ll be there. Besides tweeting about where I am and what I’m doing (@WonderLaura), you’ll probably be able to find me at the SharePoint911 booth in the exhibit hall sometimes.
Other news… When we were in Washington, DC for the Best Practices Conference in August, Brett Lonsdale and I recorded an episode of the SharePoint Podshow! We talked about creating data view web parts in SharePoint Designer. CLICK HERE to go to their site and download the show. I think I’ll include a photo in this blog post. I had lunch with Cathy Dew and Lori Gowin last week in this beautiful fall weather:
But wait! There’s more! Technical geek stuff. I’ve recorded a few new screencasts about the data view web part, on the End User SharePoint site: SharePoint Shoptalk Every Thursday at 12:30 EST, I virtually get together with Paul Galvin and Natalya Voskresenskaya for a conference call where everyone is invited to call in and ask questions.
